image Caniglia Art - 2010

As the New Year begins Caniglia asked me to attach some of his thoughts and reflections from 2009…

“To say that 2009 was a challenging year for the arts would be an understatement. A lot of Museums and Universities cut back art shows, and some Galleries closed their doors. Recession conditions have not helped either. I was fortunate to travel around the country with my latest exhibition "Awaken-A New Spirit in Figurative Painting". I really enjoyed meeting so many teachers, students, and collectors. I am very thankful to the Universities, Galleries and Museums who took a chance with my art show.

It is a truism that some of the best art comes out of times that are tough—emotionally, financially and otherwise. I feel that 2009 really made me dig deeper and made my work even stronger. My work has always been about the human condition and the many levels, secrets, and gifts that it holds. Artistic integrity is what I strive for and I really feel 2010 will hold new opportunities for all us if we keep an open mind.

Thank you all for your support
Sincerely Caniglia ”

The Caniglia drawing above is for the upcoming Marcy Arts Partnership Gala, held in Minneapolis MN, on Saturday, April 17th, 2010, from 6:00-11:00pm at the Soap Factory. Mark your calendars to attend! The show is a huge art event. If you have questions about the show or would like more info, please contact Tamara at (612) 521-9807

We will have more updates on Caniglia's exhibitions as well as group art shows that he will be part of. Caniglia will also be teaching as well as doing concept art work and covers for books in 2010.

More updates will be coming soon.

image Caniglia's Santa Lucia Painting

Caniglia’s new painting of Santa Lucia is now on display at Saint Francis Cabrini church located in the little Italy section of Omaha, Nebraska. The painting is now part of the permanent collection. The religious icon is a combination of gold leaf and oil paint. The painting took Caniglia about seven months to create and was unveiled on May 30, as part of the Santa Lucia celebration and festival which takes place once a year.

Caniglia is a Sicilian American and this was one of his first opportunities to create a piece of artwork for the Italian community that he grew up in. Caniglia's family originally came from Carlentini, Sicly. Saint Lucy is the Saint of Syracuse, Sicily. St. Lucia's feast day commemorates the day of her martyrdom, December 13th , which also was the shortest day of the year - Winter Solstice under the old Gregorian calendar. She was killed in 303 A.D. for her beliefs.

We are trying to document and video archive some of Caniglia's latest art pieces, and art shows. We have made a short video of Caniglia creating the painting of Santa Lucia. If you would like to see the process, PLEASE CLICK HERE.

Caniglia was recently chosen to participate in the international Landfill Art project. The Landfillart Art project is an international effort encompassing one-thousand-forty-one (1,041) artists to claim a piece of rusted metal garbage (mostly hubcaps) and create fine art on them. This globally minded project explores art in a new realm that transforms waste into artistic creativity as it advocates the three R’s – reduce, re-use, and recycle.

Above is Caniglia’s creation called “Nec Spe Nec Metu-Without Hope, Without Fear”.
Ken Marquis is the founder and will be publishing a book on the project showcasing all one thousand forty one (1,041) completed “metal canvases.”

There will also be a traveling show that will feature 200 of the metal canvases. The book and traveling show will publicly portray the global art community's effort to positively impact the environment through repurposing previous metal waste into great landfill art. There are over 67 countries involved that include France, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Russia and Iceland.

image As the New Year begins Caniglia asked me to attach some of his thoughts and reflections from 2008…

“As 2008 came to a close I’d like to reflect on some highlights of this past year as well as low points. I was traveling a lot this year doing gallery shows in Los Angeles at Billy Shire’s gallery as well as Gale Hart’s gallery in Sacramento, California. The west coast puts on some of the best alternative shows that I have seen. I also did one show in Omaha, Nebraska at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. The Bemis Center does a great job in funding artist both locally and internationally to keep their art visions alive. The Highlight show of the year was IlluXcon. It was a gorgeous, museumlike exhibition of works by members of the fantastic illustration community. It featured both national and international artist that work in film, books and the gaming industry.

The low point of the year was losing my teacher, mentor, and friend Grace Hartigan. She was such an incredible artist. She was filled to the brim with life and love for all things artistic. Grace was brilliant. One of the best abstract expressionists to come out of the 1950's. She had learned and painted with Jackson Pollack and William De Kooning. Her stories were incredible and her insight into my work was like a director giving advice to an actor. She questioned my development and made me really refine what I wanted in life and art. Even though we had very different styles our message was the same. We painted life for what it was...love, birth and death. She is such an inspiration and will be missed.

I wish all of you a Happy New Year and I thank all of you who have supported my work. Sincerely Caniglia”

The show will feature one of the largest displays of fantastic art ever mounted, and will be the largest gathering of illustrators of any show in recent history, including many artists rarely seen on the convention circuit. Artist in Residence is a publication developed for artists who want to showcase issues of central importance in their world. Developed by the Icelandic band Sigur Ros the website extends beyond print publication and creates one of the most unique online artistic communities in the World.

Finalist are given an invitation and their work is shown in the Gallery area of the Artist in Residence website. Artists are chosen who are true to their form, artist whose music, words, and actions represent integrity, quality and passion.

When I asked Caniglia what he thought about making the selection he said, “I am very humbled and honored to receive such an honor from my fellow peers who I hold with the highest respect and admiration. I feel A+R is one of the most progressive compassionate artistic communities of our time. I am also truly in awe of what the Icelandic community has been doing in the world. The music, literature and artwork is truly breathtaking. I sense a new renaissance is emerging from their culture and slowing growing around the world. I am just honored to be a small part of their vision.”

image Metamorphosis: Publication of 50 Surreal & Fantastic Artists is now available.
This new hardcover art book presents the work of 50 contemporary Surreal & Fantastic Artists. This cutting edge publication, shows the extremes of both ‘light’ and ‘dark’ themes in art. The two extremes are usually presented separately, but in this art book they belong together under the umbrella of human experience. The book features the work of established artists such as Caniglia, Ernst Fuchs, Alex Grey, Victor Safonkin, Andrew Gonzalez, Martina Hoffmann, Brom and Robert Venosa alongside that of relatively unknown – though extraordinary – artists, this book aims to bring a host of new artists into the public eye. This publication will be the first of a series that will provide exposure for many more artists in future.

ORDER METAMORPHOSIS

image Professor Philip Rubinov Jacobson describes this collection as "a unique book presenting art that dissolves the divisions between mind, body and Spirit. Such divisions that many accept as rigid and absolute begin to melt and change in the flames of the fantastic. Many of these artists feel that they are on a mission, following a vision like a task. They know that a task without vision is drudgery. They know that a vision and a task is the hope of the world."
